The opportunity to meet other people in similar situations is important for both patients and carers. For more information about the following groups either call 01284 766133 and ask for Orchard Day Therapy or email DayHospice@stnh.org.uk
Carers Group
This group brings together people who are caring for someone with a life threatening illness. Up to 12 carers meet weekly over 6 weeks to share their experiences and access advice and information. The group aims to help people develop and strengthen their own coping abilities and provides an opportunity to learn how others have dealt with the shared problems carers often encounter.
Managing fatigue
This is a 6 week programme for up to 8 patients to provide practical advice and information on managing fatigue and helping people pace their daily activities. This is led by our Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist.
Breathlessness clinic
This small group runs once a month for any patients who suffer from breathlessness during their illness and is led by our Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist. The aim is to give patients a ‘tool box’ of methods, like relaxation techniques, to manage symptoms without the use of drugs where possible.
Early Introduction to Hospice Services
These special sessions are run to give people who may wish to use the hospice a clear idea about what goes on in our different departments and how this might be of help to individual patients and families. As well as presenting information about Sylvan ward, our Community Hospice Team and Family Support, this will include other services that can be of benefit, like Complementary therapy or Headstart.
Headstart
Headstart provides support for people who are experiencing hair loss, offering advice on scarves, hats, make-up and other ways of coping during treatment.
