People are admitted to Sylvan Ward, our specialist unit, for a variety of reasons. For example, our staff can:
- manage symptoms that have been difficult to control at home
- help people adapt to changes so they can go back home
- provide care in the last weeks of life for those for whom dying at home is not possible.
Most people stay for one or two weeks.
The ward has single rooms and single-sexed, spacious, 4-bedded rooms. Each bed has a free television and a phone. Each room overlooks and has ease of access to the wonderful Hospice gardens
The Team
Patients and their families are cared for by a multidisciplinary team led by the Consultant and Ward Sister. A nurse will be available to answer any questions at any time, or find out when the appropriate person is available to help.
Catering
A skilled team provide patients' meals taking account of each individuals appetite and preferences. A nurse will find out if there are any allergies, special diets, likes and dislikes which will help the team manage nutrition.
Visiting facilities
Families, carers and children are welcome (as are well behaved pets!). Parking is free and permits are available from reception. There is a family room with a T.V. and an indoor area for children. Our Bradbury Bistro is open for lunches and snacks from 11.00am until 2.00pm Monday to Friday, where patients and their visitors can eat and relax together. A drinks machine and vending machine is available 'round the clock' in Bradbury Green. Meals are also available from the restaurant at West Suffolk Hospital.
Any visitors visiting after 10pm are asked to call in advance so ward staff know to expect them. The Reception area may not be staffed every night or on Bank Holidays in which case the front doors are closed for security - please ring the doorbell, found to the right of the front door, and a nurse will respond as soon as they are available to open the door for you.

Comments from a recent survey: "On arrival I thought this was it, I probably would not be leaving here, but before I knew it they controlled my pain and boosted my quality of life. Before I went in I could not walk without getting out of breath, 5 days later I was on my feet and walking out." | |
